Pat's story

Patient & Carer Stories

Pat was on holiday with a group of friends in Germany when she first noticed her hand tremor while pouring a drink. Her doctor recommended it be investigated, and she was later diagnosed with Parkinson's Disease.

Pat had known about hospices through a family member who'd worked for one, so when the Doctor referred her to St Peter's, Pat had no reservations about coming along to our Neurological Living Well programme, run by our Wellbeing Service.

Pat was first visited in her home by a Hospice Physiotherapist, who came to assess her needs before starting the group. She said: "I told her about my needs, and it made me feel relaxed knowing I was going into a safe space."

During the Neuro Living Well groups, Pat learnt ways to manage her symptoms as well as breathing techniques and relaxation.

Pat then went on to join our Brushstrokes group, where patients are guided through painting using different mediums. Patients often find these groups a good place to chat to others in similar situations. "I was too busy catching up with everyone, I never finished a painting!" said Pat.

It wasn't just Pat that benefited from attending the groups at the Hospice. Her husband John, who's also Pat's carer, said he got a better understanding of being a carer through talking to others in similar caring roles. While Pat was in the groups, John would sit and chat to the other informal carers, where they could exchange information and share their experiences. "It made me feel relaxed talking to others who know what you’re going through. I gave them advice and they helped me too. Talking is the best therapy, and it really helps people." said John.

World Parkinson's Day reminds us that hospice care isn’t just for those with cancer. We support people living with a range of non-cancer conditions, including Parkinson's Disease, and the people who care for them.

Over recent years we have got to know the local Hospital and Community Parkinson’s Disease teams. We greatly value these partnerships. We work together to help ensure those who need our support know of us and can access our services.
