Volunteers' Week 2021

Volunteer Stories

Volunteers' Week takes place this year 1-7 June and we would like to say a great big thank you to all our volunteers.

We couldn't do what we do without our volunteers, they are an integral part of all our work. In a particularly challenging year, our volunteers have stepped up more than ever, adapted to our new ways of working and supported the Hospice when we needed it most. Thank you to you all.

Here is just a small sample of what you have achieved during the pandemic:

  • Since end of the last lockdown you have given 8,699 hours of volunteer service to our charity shops. In financial terms this is roughly equal to the annual salary of three Inpatient Unit nurses.
  • Volunteer drivers have driven over 4,000 miles picking up and delivering vital PPE.
  • Since January, volunteers have made over 5,000 swab testing kits ensuring a rigorous hospice wide testing regime, vital to keeping our patients and staff safe.
  • Home-based fundraising admin volunteers have given 1,560 hours of vital support ensuring our staff were able to raise crucial funds for the Hospice.

Frank Noble, Chief Executive

Frank Noble

"One of the joys of my role is meeting all of the wonderful people who volunteer for St Peter's Hospice. You come from every corner of Bristol, North Somerset and South Gloucestershire to help care for patients, run essential support services, organise our shops, support fundraising events and many other important roles.

"Every moment of your support helps us to care for patients and their loved ones. Quite simply, we would not be here without you. Thank you"

Chris Benson, Director of Patient Care

Chris Benson

"Our volunteers have been an essential support to the clinical teams throughout the pandemic and the extra workload it has brought. You transported boxes of PPE, spent hours fit testing staff for clinical masks and administration support to the Infection Control team. Thank you for keeping all the clinical staff safe.

"Covid 19 had the potential to cause huge isolation to patients and carers who would normally visit our Brentry site. Thank you to our amazing volunteers who have delivered hours of support, counselling, spiritual support and bereavement sessions by phone, and our intrepid volunteers who have been trained to use zoom and have delivered virtual Day Service sessions. Your support has been invaluable and helped keep our patients connected and supported through a very difficult time."

Jayne Clarke, Director of Income Generation

Jayne Clarke

"We simply couldn't do what we do without our volunteers, from the collection tin collectors, the bankers, the envelope stuffers, the steamers, the till operators, the book cataloguers, the knitters, the Hospice neighbours, the drivers, the flower arrangers to name but a small fraction of the huge army that power us and make such a difference to so many local people. A huge thank you from all of us at St Peter's.

John Broomhead, Head of Retail

John Broomhead

"This roller coaster of a year has demonstrated again why our volunteer supporters are so key to our charity shops. You have all been amazing and the incredible results we have achieved would not have happened without all of your help and support. With your help we achieved a record breaking April and it is fantastic to see the retail business making money again for our fantastic hospice. Thank you"

Fran McCloskey, Director of Finance and IT

Fran McCloskey

"Volunteers make up such an important part of what we do from patient services through to income generation and support. Your presence is core to who we are, a caring organisation deeply connected to the community we serve. Without the generosity and commitment of our volunteers so much of what we do simply would not be possible. Thank you"

Dr Anjali Mullick, Medical Director

Dr Anjali Mullick

"The passion and commitment of our hospice volunteers is second to none, and does a vast amount to support the patients and families receiving our care. We achieve so much more with your help. Thank you!"

Rob Rowe, Director of People and Support

Rob Rowe

"I joined the Hospice in late 2020 but was immediately impressed by the number of volunteers that we have and the range of activities that they cover. So much so that I now have two volunteers assisting with projects in my areas. I really look forward to the contributions that these people will bring and I am so grateful to our long standing volunteers and everything they do for us."
