On Saturday 13 July we will celebrate ten years of wonder women and fundraising superstars with a special superhero-themed edition of The Midnight Walk.
The five and ten-mile sponsored walks raising money for the Hospice began in 2010 and over the last decade more than 10,000 women have taken part, raising an incredible £1 million for patient and family care in the city and surrounding areas.
The 2019 Midnight Walk was launched at the Hospice in Brentry in March by the Wonder Widows, a group of young mothers who walk in memory of their husbands who were supported by the Hospice.
The group met in 2016 at the Sole Parents group run by the Hospice, and want to highlight how the end-of-life care their husbands received helped them through their darkest hours.
Judith Stannard is a Wonder Window taking on the Midnight Walk in memory of her husband Eddie, who died of pancreatic cancer in 2015, at the age of 50.
“St Peter’s Hospice staff were amazing in the last few weeks of Eddie’s life, and have continued to support me through therapy since Eddie died,” says Judith.
“They do an amazing job, not just for patients but for the family as well. The counselling I received was absolutely amazing and helped me put my life back together.”
Judith, from Yate, is mum to her and Eddie’s two sons Alfie, 11, and Layton, nine. Her counsellor suggested she join the Sole Parents group.
“I was quite nervous but they made me feel so welcome,” says Judith. “We now provide support for each other outside of the group, and knowing there are other people that truly understand what you are going through is really important.”
“This will be my third Midnight Walk with the Wonder Widows. I am so excited to take part and would love to raise as much as possible for the Hospice.”
This year’s Midnight Walk will start from Ashton Gate Stadium at 9pm. The party kicks off with performers, party anthems and face-painting before walkers head out to experience Bristol’s famous landmarks by night. See the lights shine on the Clifton Suspension Bridge, hear the lions roar at Bristol Zoo and watch the SS Great Britain glisten on the harbour!
From dressing up as disco divas to carnival queens, every Midnight Walk has been a night to remember.
Events Fundraiser Hayley Ali said: “The Midnight Walk is one of the highlights of the Bristol events calendar and has enjoyed a fantastic ten years raising funds for Bristol’s only adult hospice.
“We are so excited to be celebrating the event’s tenth anniversary with all our Hospice Heroes! Whether you’re joining us for the first time or the tenth, help us make this year’s Midnight Walk the biggest and best ever!”
