Volunteer Roles
Here are some of the tasks undertaken by our volunteers – our Volunteer
Resources staff will work with you to find a suitable role depending on your
time availability, experience and interests.

In-patient
general volunteer
In-patient unit general volunteers who work in pairs are caring practical
people who play an important supporting role in the In Patient Unit. They
help to serve drinks, meals, run errands and chat to patients and their
visitors, allowing specialist staff to focus on palliative nursing and
medical needs.
Day
Hospice general volunteer
Day Hospice general volunteers within a team of four, supporting the nursing
staff by dealing with the patients' general needs. They give a warm and
friendly welcome to patients as they arrive, make them comfortable and serve
drinks and food throughout the day. They may help patients to take part in
any of the day's activities, or provide a listening ear and companionship.
In addition, Diversional Therapist volunteers are responsible for the
provision of Arts & Crafts activities for the patients.
Drivers
This vital and personal transport service enables patients to attend our Day
Hospice. Drivers use their own cars to transport patients from their home to
the Hospice in time for the start at 10am and return them to their homes at
the completion of Day Hospice. Our Fundraising department also uses
volunteer drivers in the collection of donations and monies raised by their
promotions.
Charity Shop volunteers
Volunteers are normally drawn from the local area of the shop. Volunteers
contact the shop Manager to arrange an interview &training. Roles in the
shops range from managing the till, controlling stock or in the background
preparing stock. Duty times are agreed.
Complementary
Therapist
Qualified therapists who belong to a professional body and hold valid
insurance and have more than one year’s experience in practice, offer
therapies that complement the work of the medical team to patients both in
the Day Hospice, inpatient unit and clinic. Currently, our patients
may be offered reflexology, holistic massage, aromatherapy and acupuncture made available under the guidance of the medical
staff.
Manicurist
/ Hairdresser
A lot of the work we do at St Peter's is about enabling patients to feel
good about themselves. Qualified manicurists and hairdressers are part of
the team supporting the nursing staff in the Day Hospice and In-Patient
Unit.
Telephonist
/ Receptionist
Telephone/ Reception volunteers play an important role in welcoming visitors
and patients' families, to have daily contact with staff and deal with
incoming telephone calls. These volunteers give a warm
professional welcome and are sensitive to the needs of the individual. Free
training provided.
Family
Support Volunteer
Experienced volunteers receive further training and, under the supervision
of the social work team, work in the patient’s home to
offer companionship and help with practical non-nursing tasks.
Bereavement
Visitor
Experienced volunteers receive further training to offer bereavement support
to families, friends and carers.
Gardener
+ /or maintenance volunteers
Working alongside our staff Gardener & Maintenance Operative at each site,
garden volunteers tend St Peter's award-winning gardens by cutting the
grass, weeding, watering and planting out. No experience is necessary, but a
healthy back preferred. Maintenance volunteers assist with specific tasks
related to their skills, in and around the Hospice.
Flower
Arranging / Plant Care
Flower volunteers work inside the Hospice arranging donated flowers and
refreshing vases in the patient's rooms, Reception and in other public
areas. There is flexibility about the time of day and length of duty for
this role.
Arts
and Crafts Specialist
Working with, and under the supervision of, the nursing staff in the Day
Hospice, these volunteers facilitate activities with the patients, providing
interest, enjoyment, a sense of achievement and the chance to try something
new.
Pastoral Volunteers
Volunteers work alongside the Hospice Chaplin's giving pastoral
support to patients in the in-Patient Unit and Day Hospice, sometimes
leading Services as well as supporting families and friends. Volunteers are
selected by the Hospice Lead Chaplin who would also arrange their duty
times.
Administration
Assistant
We are supported in all of our administration areas by volunteer clerical
staff. We require people with computer skills to create
spreadsheets, maintain databases, etc but we also need help with manual tasks like
stuffing envelopes, filing and photocopying.
Fundraising
A wide range of roles either at the PR & Fundraising Office in Clifton in
supporting roles (or at specific events) -

Regularity & Duty times arranged with Fundraising Team Leader.
